Types of Solopreneurs and a Simple Guide to Business Systems
Introduction
As the world of entrepreneurship continues to evolve, a new breed of business owner has emerged: the solopreneur. A solopreneur is an individual who runs their own business, often with minimal overhead costs and maximum flexibility. In this guide, we’ll explore the world of solopreneurship, including the benefits, essential systems, and common challenges faced by solopreneurs.
What is a Solopreneur?
A solopreneur is a business owner who operates their own business, often with no employees. This business model allows individuals to be their own boss, work on their own terms, and pursue their passions without the burden of managing a team. Solopreneurs can be found in various industries, from digital marketing and graphic design to personal training and consulting. Whether you’re a content creator or a consultant, being a solopreneur means you have the freedom to shape your business around your lifestyle and goals.
Benefits of Being a Solopreneur
Being a solopreneur offers numerous benefits, including:
-
Flexibility: Solopreneurs can work from anywhere, at any time, as long as they have a stable internet connection. This flexibility allows for a better work-life balance and the ability to travel or work from home.
-
Autonomy: Solopreneurs are their own bosses, allowing them to make decisions and take risks without needing to consult with others. This autonomy fosters creativity and innovation, as you have the freedom to experiment with new business ideas.
-
Minimal overhead costs: Solopreneurs don’t need to worry about renting office space, hiring employees, or managing benefits. This lean business model means more of your revenue goes directly into your pocket.
-
Unlimited earning potential: Solopreneurs can earn as much as they want, limited only by their skills, hard work, and dedication. With the right business strategy and systems in place, the sky’s the limit for your income.
Types of Solopreneurs
There are various types of solopreneurs, each with their own unique focus and business models. Here are some common categories:

Each type of solopreneur brings a different approach to entrepreneurship, catering to diverse markets and needs.
Overcoming Challenges as a Solopreneur
While being a solopreneur offers many benefits, it also comes with its own set of challenges. Here are some common challenges faced by solopreneurs:
-
Managing time and priorities: Solopreneurs need to be able to manage their time effectively, prioritizing tasks and focusing on high-leverage activities. Using tools like calendars, planners, and time-blocking techniques can help you stay organized and productive.
-
Finding clients and customers: Solopreneurs need to be able to find and attract clients and customers, whether through marketing, networking, or referrals. Building a strong personal brand and leveraging digital marketing strategies can help you reach your target audience.

Managing Time and Priorities
Managing time and priorities is essential for solopreneurs. Here are some tips for managing your time effectively:
-
Use a calendar or planner to schedule tasks and appointments. This helps you visualize your day and ensures you don’t overlook important tasks.
-
Prioritize tasks based on importance and urgency. Focus on high-leverage activities that drive your business forward, such as marketing and sales.
-
Use time-blocking to schedule large blocks of uninterrupted time. This technique helps you stay focused and productive by dedicating specific times to specific tasks.
-
Take breaks and practice self-care to avoid burnout. Regular breaks and self-care activities can help you maintain your energy and motivation.
By following these tips and systems, solopreneurs can overcome common challenges and achieve success in their businesses. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to scale your existing business, these essential systems and strategies can help you achieve your goals and live the life you want.
Essential Systems for Solopreneurs
To succeed as a solopreneur, it’s essential to have the right systems in place. Here are some key systems to consider:

Not sure what systems you actually need in your solopreneur business model?
By the end of this video, you’ll know exactly what systems you need to implement in your business and why they are critical to your business success. For the best entrepreneurship strategy and systems advice, subscribe to my channel below and hit the bell to be notified when I post a video every Tuesday.
These are the exact systems I’ve built in all my clients’ businesses, no matter what level they’re currently at from brand new startups to eight plus figures of revenue annually, no matter what size the business, these systems are exactly the same. These systems can also be applied to various solopreneur business ideas, providing flexibility and low overhead costs for individuals looking to start their own ventures.
The only difference is that they might get a little more complex as the business grows, but before I dive in, let me tell you that you do not want to miss system number six. It might surprise you, but it truly is the most important one out of all of them. Alright, let’s dive in.
The first system is implementation, also known as delivery.
These are the systems you typically think of when you hear the word or phrase business systems. These are the technology automations and processes that work in the background to help you guide people seamlessly through the customer journey or experience from capturing a lead to making a sale to delivering the products that they purchased from you.
Within this system are tools like your email platform, you’re e-commerce or payment platform, your CRM system, your online course platform, your project management tool, and anything that helps you deliver that experience that you want to deliver to your leads and customers.
These systems are crucial for solopreneurs aiming to achieve a profitable business by ensuring efficient operations and customer satisfaction.
Now I know you might be thinking that when someone says business systems to you that these were the only types of systems that came to mind and now I’m telling you that there’s actually five more types of systems I know mind blown, but stay with me and I promise you we will get through this.
The second type of systems is your Growth and digital marketing systems.
These are the systems that help you grow your business. This includes your marketing strategy, your sales funnel, your product offerings, and how they all work together to bring in more revenue more efficiently to help your business grow. This type of system can also include team structure as in building your team to grow more quickly.
The solopreneur business model is a flexible and straightforward approach that can help individuals achieve business growth independently. But since this video specifically for solopreneurs, I’m saving that for a different video. Well, all systems are critical for the success of your business. This one is especially so because without growth or revenue, your business is not going to survive very long.
The third type of system is Design systems.
It’s important to make sure that you are building your business in a way that is aligned with you, the business owner, with how you run your business and how it impacts your life as a whole. For example, if you’re an introvert, it’s critical to make sure you aren’t building a business that requires you to be actively networking and socializing over eight hours a day.
It’s important to make sure you are aligned with what you’re building, who do you love working with? How do you want to help them? This might sound like a given and many entrepreneurs know these things intuitively, but it’s also important to actively make decisions and document them around what type of business you want to build. Valuable insights can help solopreneurs align their business design with their personal preferences and goals.
So you and everyone you work with are crystal clear as you move forward. It’s important to have a system in place to nail down the destination that you’re heading toward and assist them to reflect and adapt or reroute when your destination changes because believe me, comment below and tell me the most important thing that you are intentionally designing into your business as you scale. Is it your niche, how you serve them, specifically your work style, the people you work with. Tell me below.
The fourth type of system is Planning and business strategy systems.
If design is all about deciding your destination, planning is all about figuring out how you’re going to get there. With many individuals starting their own businesses for greater flexibility and independence, planning becomes even more crucial. Planning is a personal favorite system of mine because if done well, it can be your best friend and getting things done in your business and the most efficient way possible. It involves taking the what the design and figuring out the house step by step and on a timeline.
Without a plan, it’s going to be really hard to get to your destination. Creating strategic and realistic roadmaps, revenue and financial planning and 90 day action plans are critical components of the system as is your project management process to make sure that you stay on time and within budget.
The fifth system is Measurement and business operations systems.
If you know where you’re going and how you’re going to get there, it’s important to know exactly where you are on that journey and how much progress you’ve made. Following our car example, measurement is like the GPS that tells you how many minutes and miles to your destination. This system includes creating KPIs, setting smart goals, having access to the right data, analyzing it, and making optimizations or rerouting as you go.
Of all the systems I build for entrepreneurs, this one is usually the scariest for most of them because it’s easy to dive into a data rabbit hole, but there are easy ways to ease into this system where you still get the value you need without spending hours just staring at numbers in an Excel spreadsheet. A personal trainer, for example, needs to measure progress and outcomes to help clients achieve their fitness goals.
Now, the sixth and final system is critical, especially for solopreneurs and entrepreneurs that want to truly scale their business and that's Leadership systems.
These are the systems that get and keep your mind in the game, thinking like a leader in your business, not just a Doer or an employee in your business.
This includes your personal development practice or morning rituals, learning new skills, removing limiting beliefs, expanding your upper limits and abundance mindset, vision, crafting, and so much more that help you embody that leadership role and make decisions from that place.
Without these systems to help you up your game, your business will stay stagnant. There is no question about that. So now you know the six types of systems you need to have in your business and why you need to have all of them, but which of these systems needs your attention the most?
I've created a guide to help give you more information on each of these systems, including a quick audit to help you determine which system is the most critical for you. Right now.
