As an entrepreneur, you've probably heard just how important it is to know your numbers and know your metrics so that you can start making better decisions about your business. But what if you're just getting started and have no idea to get where you are to where you want to go and perhaps are too embarrassed or ashamed to ask, well, guess what, I'm here to help you just like I've helped countless of other entrepreneurs who used to be stuck in that same place, not so long ago. Well, you should be tracking all sorts of data in your business and especially in your marketing, getting started by tracking your website.
Data is both easy and super informative place to start still, not fully convinced. You should check out this video I created that might help motivate you to get Google Analytics up and running quickly. This video will show you the three key business strategy decisions that metrics can answer.
So why am I pushing you to set up Google analytics as quickly as possible? Because you will only have data from the point that you set it up going forward. So the sooner you've set it up, even if you set it up and forget about it for weeks or months, the more historical data you will have to look at and use when you're ready to analyze the data that you have from your Google analytics homepage, go to admin, then go to property setting or property, and then tracking info tracking code. And from here, you can actually grab your Google analytics tracking ID right here, or the tracking code that you can place throughout your site. So make sure you copy these and save them into a safe spot because you will need them to implement Google analytics on your website. Now you need to implement that tracking code on all your web properties anywhere you're hosting a website or landing pages.
Since there are tons of platforms to implement on, I can't show you how to implement that code on all of them. So my little trick is just to actually Google, how to do it with your specific platforms. For example, Google implement Google Analytics on Squarespace and see what comes up.
Once you have the tracking code implemented data will automatically start collecting in Google analytics, but give it about 24 hours to populate or so comment below. And let me know, what's the one piece of data that you are most looking forward to checking out and Google analytics.
Once it's up and running, Google analytics is implemented, and now it's time to take a look at your data. You can do this. I'm going to give you some quick tips about where to start looking around in Google analytics and what you actually need to be on the lookout for the best place to start.
When you are new is the audience overview report. Here. You can see on a high level, what people are actually doing on your site and the mix of visitors that are landing on it. Next, I recommend going to the acquisition overview report and seeing how people are actually finding your site and what platforms are directing traffic there. Finally, once you have goals set up in Google analytics, I also recommend going to conversions goals, overview report, to see the details around the high-value engagement happening on your site.
If you're new to Google Analytics, you'll have to implement goals yourself, but don't worry. I've got you covered. Check out this video that I created that will teach you why goals are so important on your site. And I actually take you through step by step, how to implement one yourself. Lastly, if you're new to using metrics and data to make better decisions for your business, you might be thinking, well, all this data is great, but what the heck am I looking for?
When you start looking at your data, I recommend looking for things that pop out or seem interesting within the data irregularities. When you start to spot them, start thinking about what caused that irregularity and why so that you can start doing things that either cause more or less of that result, data can be complicated, but it doesn't have to be, if you take these simple steps to get started, if you're ready to start making smarter decisions easily and more confidently to scale your business to greater success, check out my Facebook group, the confident and data-driven entrepreneurs, where I have live trainings and Q and A's three times a week.
